My kids are starting to notice I’m a little different from the other dads. “Why don’t you have a straight job like everyone else?” they asked me the other day.

I told them this story:
In the forest, there was a crooked tree and a straight tree. Every day, the straight tree would say to the crooked tree, “Look at me…I’m tall, and I’m straight, and I’m handsome. Look at you…you’re all crooked and bent over. No one wants to look at you.” And they grew up in that forest together. And then one day the loggers came, and they saw the crooked tree and the straight tree, and they said, “Just cut the straight trees and leave the rest.” So the loggers turned all the straight trees into lumber and toothpicks and paper. And the crooked tree is still there, growing stronger and stranger every day. – Tom Waits.

The sunrise and the sunsets, you’re lying while you confess, keep trying to explain
The sunrise and the sunsets, you realise then you forget what you’ve been trying to retain

But everybody knows it’s all about the things that get stuck inside of your head
Like the songs your roommate sings, a vision of her body as she stretches out on your bed
And she raised her hands in the air, asked you when was the last time you looked in the mirror
Because you’ve changed
Yeah, you’ve changed

The sunrise, the sunsets, you’re hopeful and then you regret, the circle never breaks
With a sunrise and a sunset, there’s a change of heart or address, is there nothing that remains?
For a sunrise or a sunset, you’re manic or you’re depressed, will you ever feel okay?
For a sunrise or a sunset, your lover is an actress, did you really think she’d stay?

DEATH RITES

In the late 80s and early 90s skateboarding was heavily indebted to thrash metal. Decks and merch were covered in skulls and bleeding eye sockets, Suicidal Tendencies had released “Possessed To Skate”, and Venom blasted on the 1984 Let it Bleed video. It was skate rock or die.

In Sydney, Shawn Yates and his high school friends were shredding rails and head banging to bands such as Death, Nihili – Noisey.

Skateboarding and music have long gone together. This time it’s in a far more literal sense. Nick Pourfard and his company Prisma Guitars create guitars (as the name would suggest) out of old and broken skateboard decks. A merging of the arts if you will, or the least a sweet guitar.
